Get To Know Your Therapist: Alex

Alex began work with Between in 2022.

We wanted you to have an opportunity to get to know Alex because he’s a really good person to know. We sat down with Alex to ask him some questions about his life and work…

Tell us a little about yourself.

I have spent the last 15 years working in the public school system as a teacher, mentor, and counselor. I coach high school volleyball, middle school baseball, elementary school basketball, and anything else I can! My favorite things in the world are connecting with other people, playing sports, reading, and playing games. I am a socialized introvert, I am endlessly, genuinely curious, and I'd rather listen than talk. I have a focus on bringing good into the world and following my passions - I try to do everything in my life with meaning, intention, and joy.

What kind of moments light you up as a therapist?

This is a hard one because there are so many moments that light me up in different ways. The first one that came into my mind is when you can feel yourself completely on the same page with a client - the two of you are in step and working together on something, or you give a thought and it completely resonates with them. That sort of understanding, connection, and feeling of being on the same exact frequency is a really beautiful human experience.

What are some lesser known facts about you?

I'll just rattle off a few random ones! I have ADHD and some learning disabilities, I dropped out of high school for a brief time, I played club table tennis in college, I love doing and designing puzzles, I used to coach boxing, and chocolate milk is my favorite drink of all time.

In what ways are you growing right now?

So many ways, always! I am working hard to continually grow my craft as a therapist, I am working on dealing with failure and being bad at things, I am working on cooking meals at home, and I am working on reading all books written by both NK Jemisin and Brandon Sanderson.

A couple movies/shows you love?

I love TV and movies so I'll have to limit myself to only 3 shows and 3 movies here, but I'll happily talk about others anytime!

TV: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Avatar the Last Airbender, and Taskmaster (a dry British comedy panel show).

Movies: Get Out, Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, and Snatch.
